Heavy metals removal from drinking water

Heavy metals removal from drinking water

Due to the discharge of large amounts of metal-contaminated wastewater, high consumption of aquifers and reduction of water table the amount of heavy metal elements such as As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, As, Pb, and Zn has been increased in drinking water in the last decades. Because of their high solubility in the aquatic environments, heavy metals can be absorbed by living organisms. Therefore, it is necessary to treat metal-contaminated wastewater prior to its discharge to the environment.

PNF Co., with the idea of a natural phenomenon of cavitation, produces nano cavitation device that leads to oxidation of heavy metals. Oxidized metal with higher capacity can easily be removed by using absorbent such as active alumina.

Arsenic species in groundwater occur in two oxidation states, As(III) and As(V). Using PNF's method leads to:

·        Generation of high quantity of free radicals (H+ and OH-) by creation of nano bubbles and explosion of this bubbles in the water.

·        Reaction of most of metal elements with the hydroxyl group and production of acidic salts.

·        Improving the efficiency of this reaction because of high energy in local bubble explosion.

·        The entry of the water stream to an absorbent bed.

Oxidation of heavy metals improves their absorption capability on the alumina absorbent. As a result, the efficiency of removing these contaminants is increased. An industrial unit has been implemented by PNF Co. in a city in north of Iran with 30 liter/sec capacity.

PNF Co., has offered As removal from drinking water units using special high efficiency absorbents which is suitable for small capacities.

The adsorbents should be changed after saturation time. The life time will be at least one year for As lower than 80 ppb. The saturated adsorbents can be disposed without causing any environmental problems.

These simply units don’t need chemicals and electricity so they have low fixed investment and operational cost. The cost of maintenance will mainly be related to the replacing adsorbents.
